By all rights, our lead story this week should have been, “Biden’s Too Old and Forgetful to Be Prosecuted. But luckily, we are a higher education publication and so the story of the week is best summed up by Angel Pérez, president of the National Association for College Admission Counseling, this way: “Stunned. Gobsmacked, really… This is devastating—I’m not sure what other word to use.” Which is why Inside Higher Ed called the Biden Administration’s “much-criticized” rollout of the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid form (FAFSA) “yet another ‘devastating’ FAFSA delay.” It now looks like colleges will not begin receiving applicants’ federal aid information until March at the earliest, which would pretty much sum up the problems that universities and their prospective students are having this week –- which is many weeks since December, when the forms were first promised. How are students supposed to select a college or colleges select students without knowing how much money they have to work with? And to think that this congressional mandated makeover was supposed to “simplify” the process.
